Lure Coursing

Lure coursing is a popular activity for Salukis and other sighthounds, giving them a chance to demonstrate their natural hunting ability and athleticism. It’s a perfect outlet for Salukis’ high energy level. Lure coursing events are also another enjoyable social opportunity for both Salukis and their owners.

How does lure coursing work? The hounds chase a mechanically operated lure, (typically a fluttering, white plastic bag) attached to a line that runs through pulleys laid out to make turns on a safe field. Performance is judged based on speed, agility, endurance, ability to follow the lure through turns and obstacles, and enthusiasm. Dogs run by themselves in “singles stakes” until certified to run compatibly with other dogs. After that, they can compete with others for field championship titles. There are other coursing type events open to all breeds (not just sighthounds) that Salukis can enter, such a Coursing Ability Tests (CAT) and FAST CAT. The AKC and the American Sighthound Field Association are two national organizations that sanction trials held by the many regional lure coursing clubs..
