Salukis thrive when they are having fun with their owners and positive experiences contribute to enthusiasm for any sport. Remember individual dogs vary in their interests and aptitudes. It’s important to pay attention to your Saluki’s preferences and comfort level, so be consistent and make your training sessions short and full of praise and rewards. Whether backyard fun or competitive sport and titles, shared activities are the best ways to engage and bond with your Saluki while also providing physical and mental stimulation (for both of you!).
More and more Salukis are enjoying activities that aren’t, at first glance, natural for sighthounds. Many participate in sports such as dock diving, barn hunt, oval or straight track racing, trick dog, open field coursing, rodeo, and more. You’ll want to carefully think about whether or not your dog would enjoy these sports and, as always, visit a few events and try them out gradually. You’ll never know unless you both try!
