Membership Requirements

Regular Membership

The Club seeks candidates who have demonstrated genuine interest in Salukis and the sport of purebred dogs and who intend to be active, contributing members. A history of involvement in Club events is helpful. Prospects are expected to manifest the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and humane practices.
To meet the requirements for REGULAR membership, you must currently own or co-own a Saluki and have been involved with the breed for a minimum of seven (7) years, and maintain one or more Salukis in your home for that period. If you are new to our breed and have not owned a saluki for seven (7) years, you can apply for an ASSOCIATE Membership. We also welcome young people (ages 9 to 18) to become JUNIOR Members. Please see the following sections for ASSOCIATE and JUNIOR Membership requirements.
If you are a breeder, you will need to document both a selective breeding program and the disposition of all get. You must be in good standing with the AKC, and agree to abide by the SCOA Code of Ethics and uphold the Constitution, which outlines the Club purpose.
For REGULAR membership, you must be at least 18 years of age and be sponsored by two SCOA members who are not related to you or each other through family, household or business and who have known you for at least two (2) years. Your primary sponsor will request an application package from the Membership Chairman. The application package will include an introduction letter, your application form, and various club documents such as the By-Laws. A home visit by one of the sponsors is required. A married couple may apply on one application if both sign the application form.
Your main sponsor will guide you through the application process, but in brief:

  • Your completed application with appropriate fee and the completed, signed sponsor forms goes to the Membership chair.
  • Your name will be published in the next quarterly SCOA Newsletter for membership comments within 30 days. If comments are received, you will be notified through your primary sponsor so that you may respond appropriately.
  • If there are no membership comments, your application package will be forwarded to the Membership Committee, for review and recommendation. The Membership chair will consolidate committee comments and forward the package to the Board.
  • The Board will review, discuss and vote on your application package. The President will usually notify you and your sponsors of the results.

Associate Membership

An applicant for Associate membership is an individual who is at least 18 years of age but has not owned a Saluki for the required seven (7) years, but who keeps their Saluki in their household in a safe and healthy environment and who is interested in participating in the activities and events of the SCOA. ( Code of Ethics, Para 3) The home visit and sponsorship requirements are the same as those of Regular membership. The applicant will apply using the Board approved Associate Application form. Associate members may not vote, hold office, sponsor new members or nominate candidates for office. Associate members can, however, serve on committees, attend Meet the Breed events, volunteer at the National Specialty and participate in other such SCOA events.

Junior Membership

Junior Membership is open to individuals at least 9 years of age and under 18 years of age. Junior Members cannot vote, do not pay dues, and are ineligible to hold office, sponsor new members, or nominate candidates for office. Individuals may apply for Junior Membership directly to the Membership Chair, using the Board approved Junior Membership application form. The application must be accompanied by the signature and recommendation of at least one Regular (sponsor) member and include the written permission of the applicant’s parent or legal guardian. Junior Membership applications are not subject to the 30-day membership comment period. Acceptance to the SCOA as a Junior Member shall require the affirmative vote of a majority of the Board. The initiation fee shall be set by the Board of Directors and shall not exceed $15.00. Junior members are not required to pay annual dues. Once a Junior Member reaches the age of 18, he shall automatically be considered for Regular Membership. Application for Regular Membership from a Junior Member shall be on the Board approved Regular Membership form and is addressed in the SCOA By Laws, Section 3B.
