It certainly was a memorable National. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and judging by the photographs and videos of the Top 20 event and the Dinner, a quite hilarious time! Before I say anything more I must express my thanks to the many people who made this event not only possible but so enjoyable for everyone and no less than the Judge Elect-yours truly. Firstly, my wonderful steward who was here, there, and everywhere and who made my task so much easier, Kaleena Lowther and her mother at the Superintendent table! Monica Stoner, the show chair, who kept things running, Patsy Hoy, Assistant Chair, who was there to help keep things going smoothly, Cheryl Holman-Agility Trial, Tom Cigolle-Lure Trials, President Brian Duggan, and all who coordinated together to allow this wonderful event to take place.
I certainly was surprised and overwhelmed by the huge entry for the show, which was most gratifying! Not only for myself but for the Futurity judge-Jim Griffin, and Sweepstakes-judge Joseph Minor.
Someone asked me about my little black book! I note down what I see-it helps me decide my placements. Also let me say, it would be sensible if the catalogue was in the order the dogs are judged! Especially when writing a critique!
Now to the dogs, and there were a number I would love to have packed away to take home! A wonderful entry and some lovely hounds. I think my final cut and BOB line-up shows what I was looking for - MODERATION. Both in conformation, and soundness of movement, hocks parallel going away, and distance in front, with relaxed side action. Not overdone rears or extreme angles forehand and rear, and definitely not great extension on the move. The hard part of judging for me is trying to find those dogs that fit my interpretation of the Standard and yet move well. The easy part is to place dogs that fit the Standard, look the part, but do not move well. I have often said when seeing a picture of a lovely Saluki, "I wonder how it moves?"
Four veterans were given Awards of Merit. I was making a statement here. It behooves members to take a look at the dogs in the final cut, for I believe we are moving away from soundness. It is depressing to see so many beautiful dogs standing, and then see horrendous movement. And believe me I saw it all-the excellent, the good, the bad and the ugly. Some had parallel rears but terrible front action-paddling, crossing, flipping pasterns, hackney movement, and elbowing. Others had perfect front movement but so close in the rear they almost crossed, or one couldn't fit a pencil between the hocks, cow hocks, and hocks turning out.
However, on a brighter note I was more than happy with my placements, showing varied types but sound movement. It was interesting to see that there were only several that I questioned on height, and very, very, few with over-angulated rears. On the question of height, we have a five inch range, one of the largest in dogs. Males average from 23 to 28 inches with bitches proportionately smaller. So, lineups can have quite a variation in height, this does not mean inconsistency, but variation in type and hopefully will have things in common, especially movement. And any breeder should be able to stay within a five inch height range.
Shoulder layback is an important part of the conformation of our Salukis. The Standard asks for .... "shoulders sloping and set well back, well-muscled without being coarse." with some return of arm, and fill between the elbows. I looked for this in all exhibits and placed accordingly, and certainly not ski slope withers (my term). The same with rear angulation, I was looking for..."stifle moderately bent, hocks low to the ground...."
I did find a few short tails and a couple with kinks. As with everything else, it is important as they are very hard to breed out and I am speaking from personal experience. Also, some attention should be paid to nose pigment. Our Standard allows for black or liver, not black and liver, pink and black, or liver and pink, and to me liver is a dark brown. I wouldn't by liver that was very pale or spotted. Most dogs had good muscle tone and were well presented, lovely feet, and steady. Further comments on the entry and the Breed will be found in the following critique.
