2017 SCOA National critiques
SCOA - National Specialty Show Critique
Judge: Kathy Webb
It was as great honour to be invited to judge your National Specialty Show. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and greatly appreciated the sporting manner in which the exhibitors graciously excepted my placements.
Having attended the National at Kentucky a couple of times as a spectator I never dreamt I would have this opportunity to go over so many Salukis. On planning my assignment I decided to fly over 4 days before judging to make sure I was in the time zone as with three days of judging I didn’t want to feel tired before I started.
Purina Farms is an excellent venue for dogs, exhibitors, spectators and judges alike, however, I did find the air conditioning a little chilly at times. Thank you to the hard working SCOA on site Show Chair, Monica Stoner and her Committee for preparing a spacious ring which gave me plenty of room to assess the exhibits. As ever, I was always mindful of the AKC time restrictions and again thanks must go to my hard working Ring Steward, Sandy Rockwell and exceptionally efficient Event Secretary, Judy Lowther who kept me and the pace going.
On the last day of my assignment, I had the pleasure of watching over 120 salukis and handlers parade together, it was a spectacular sight to see them all in the ring. However, it was with trepidation when I knew they had to be whittled down to only 15 for the top awards.
I found it a refreshing experience to judge dogs I have never seen or handled before. Likewise the classifications, these differ so much from the UK but I rewarded from whatever the class, after all the Best is the Best. It also delighted me to see on receiving my marked catalogue, that once again I had been very familial with my final judgements. This may not be popular with some exhibitors but very satisfying for me.
I have been asked to give my opinion of the Salukis exhibited under me. I was very pleased with the majority of Salukis exhibited and all my final placements were of excellent quality, which I have commented on later. It gave me great pleasure to have judged some promising puppies and youngsters, this really does bode well for the future of the breed.
As always, I asked the handlers/owner to move their hounds at a collected trot and on a loose lead, as I believe this is the best way to see true saluki movement. Moving at this pace also highlights the balanced outline with slight rise over the loin. In the end I rewarded dogs with grace & symmetry, showing as many virtues as possible with few or none of the faults that should be penalised.
Presentation on the whole was excellent, although there were many who needed their teeth cleaned, which for me, should be included when preparing your dog for the show ring. In general I liked the size and proportions (height to length) of the Salukis exhibited, most having the correct characteristics of the breed standard. I was extremely impressed with the muscle condition of all hounds, even the Veterans. I understand a number of my winners also excelled in racing or coursing, always good to hear of dual purpose Salukis. However, movement and top lines do need to be watched. Unfortunately, there were also many with straight shoulders and/or upper arms, sloping top lines and over angulated rear ends, with these construction faults there is no way they can move with a light lifting gait. Sadly these traits, with the TRAD (tremendous reach and drive) movement do appear to be on the increase worldwide and the trend is for many judges to award them highly. There was also a tendency to stack many of the moderate Salukis using bait and I was similarly surprised to see the use of toys when taking photos. This is really unnecessary as it alters the natural stance and makes for an exaggerated pose.
My only regret was that I didn’t get to meet and chat with the exhibitors or spectators after judging. I can understand with the long photography sessions and three or more days at the Show everyone is eager to pack up and start their journeys home. Nevertheless, I very much enjoyed this assignment and my sincere thanks go to the members of the SCOA for inviting me to judge this fantastic Specialty.
Best of Breed
GCH 7SEAS PARFAIT THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN
A perfectly presented, stunning black and silver smooth bitch. Feminine head, long neck fits neatly into her shoulders, moderately filled in forechest, deep well sprung rib cage, neat waist, ideal moderate rear angulation with just the right amount of sweep to give balance to her front angulation. Correct slope to pasterns and croup. Her body silhouette is excellent as is her rock hard muscular condition. On the move this bitch really excels, doesn’t put a foot wrong, she is sound with lovely light action, and when I slowed down the handler I could have watched her all day.
Best of Opposite Sex
CH DOUBLETIMES MATRIX RELOADED JC BN
A very beautiful looking Black and White Parti-colour who oozes quality. An ideal sized elegant male, nicely marked, presented in fabulous coat and muscular condition. Handsome head with expressive eyes framed by his long feathered ears, strong neck set smoothly into a well laid forehand, chest is deep and well ribbed back, strong loin, good width and strength to hind quarters, typical feet and long tail. Completely balanced kept his classic outline when moving, which is ground covering, true, light and lifting. He put in a great performance to win this award, a truly traditional saluki, one I would be proud to own.
Select Dog
DC KAROB SANDSTORM FASTER FORWARD SC
A beautiful well constructed attractive Grizzle of larger proportions. Another in tip top condition. Masculine head with dark pigment and expressive eyes, strong neck, very well proportioned body, balanced front and rear angulation, well defined underline. On the move he was extremely sound ‘coming and going’ with such a lovely light, free action side gait. He pushed really hard for the top spot but I just preferred the size and refinement of my winner.
Select Bitch
DC ASPEN’S ZIVA OF SEA WIND BN RN SC CGCA CGCU
A glamorous 3 year old Mahogany and White well feathered parti-colour from the Coursing Class. Top quality with ideal proportions, strong neck, super front and rear quarters which she certainly can use on the move. A curvaceous underline with the correct muscular rise over the loin. She has great elegance and the most gorgeous head and eye with darkest of pigment. Good feet and excellent muscle tone but that’s to be expected on a coursing bitch. Moved soundly with very easy profile strides.
Awards of Merits
A pleasure to judge and to be able to give out these further awards was most rewarding. I was captivated by all the salukis who had made my last cut. It was really uplifting to see so many good quality, moderate, well balanced representatives of our breed. After a long day I was truly impressed with all the remaining exhibits condition and fitness, they were all eager to take another lap of the ring which is where I made my last judgements. I would, however, like to apologise to the owner/handlers who I understand had more than one hound qualify for this competition that I didn’t give you the opportunity to change dogs. Nevertheless, the final ten had all the breed characteristics and movement I look for in a saluki, a credit to their owners……Well done!!

1. CHAYA’S AHYAN. Black fringed red in super weight and muscle condition, masculine head, strong neck, good fore chest and front angulation, super width to his hind quarters, well proportioned and balanced for his age, gave his handler a hard time but when he settled moved with power and grace.
2. CHAYA’S HASANI AMYR OF OLIVE Red with flashy white markings, finer litter brother to 1st and has many of the same attributes, just a little higher in the rear at this stage, well muscled and moving soundly. (Both very promising)
3. SHASEI CAPTAIN MORGAN DARKRUM JALYNN
Puppy Dogs 9-12 months
1. EXCELSOIR SUNDARA TIME IS A RIVER A refined red male, lovely coat and muscle tone, somewhat square at this stage and rather straight in front assembly, not showing the balance I like and rather unsettled on the move however he had to be placed over 2.
2. SUNNUSTEINS SILVERSHADOW’S JUPITER ELESSAR. Unfortunately he was very timid and I was unable to assess him properly. Nevertheless, from my observations I preferred the balanced moderate construction of this cream boy, masculine head, correct slope to the pasterns, deep brisket, strong top line, moved ok.
Dogs 12-15 months
1. HELDORADO STAMPEDE AT SUNDOG SALOON. A young impressive red, shown in tip-top condition, very pleasing head and eye, good forehand, pasterns and feet, well ribbed deep chest with correct rise over the loin, strong rear quarters which he uses on the move, very sound coming and going.
2. STERLING STREAK OF LIGHTNING. A finer black & fawn built on racier lines, attractive head with dark eyes, long neck into well laid shoulders and return of upper arm, he falls away a little in the rear and is a trifle long in the second thigh but this doesn’t affect his movement which was light and lifting.
3. CELESTIAN ZAGREB STARDUST AT CITROEN HALL
Dogs 15-18 months
1. CHAYA’S DARK KNIGHT IXAN. Elegant Black and Tan, nice head, strong neck, well balanced with a strong top line and curvy under line, good front assembly and pasterns, nice depth of chest, good hind angulation, moved well when he settled.

1. EL SHADDAI’S EXTRAVAGANT HERO. An impressive almost white with jet black pigment. Old fashion type, so well put together, masculine head, strong neck, good angulation fore and aft, depth and length of rib cage. In excellent condition, has a light graceful gait, the best mover in the class
2. KHAMSIN’S STERLING STETSON. A Silver Grizzle with white markings, attractive head with expressive eyes. Deep chest, good bone, long tail, powerful rear quarters but doesn’t have quite the balance I look for being rather straighter in the front and was a little restricted in his movement.
3. EL BAZ ULA UDI
Amateur-Owner-Handler Dogs
1. EDEN’S TAZI B KAREEF AL KHAZIB SM CGC A really handsome Black and Tan smooth, he is a nice size, has a lovely head with kind eye, in excellent body condition and has a gleaming coat. I couldn't fault his construction which is completely balanced, everything flows together. A very easy mover, extremely true coming and going and with a wonderful side gait to match. Top quality, he never stopped showing and I was pleased to award him. Winners Dog and Best of Winners on the final day.
2. EL JEKI ALEXANDRITE LUCKY IN LOVE. A beautiful proportioned Fawn & White Feathered Parti-colour. Pleasing head and expression, strong neck, balanced front and rear angulation, deep brisket, strong top line, again in good coat and muscular condition. 3. OWL RIDGE GUNSLINGER JC
Bred by Exhibitor Dogs Super class, the four placed could change places on another day.
1. WILD WEST SHOW AT SUNDOG SALOON. A stunningly marked black and white parti colour. Beautiful head, his expressive eyes enhanced by some tan points. Lovely flowing outline, super front and rear quarters, good depth of chest and correct rise over the loin, moved well with effortless strides covering plenty of ground. He is only just over a year old and will be even better when he matures.
2. ZIA IMPALA THE BLACK BAVARIAN. Another youngster, black smooth in super coat and muscle condition, masculine head, strong neck, his chest was well filled, deep and with good ribbing, strong top line and hindquarters. Moved with purpose, and has a flowing and sound action.
3. YAMADAN BARQ AL ADEED
American Bred Dogs Close decision between the first three.
1. ZIA IMPALA ALASKAN AMBER DREAM. Another from the same litter. A well made dark golden smooth, very balanced and athletic looking young dog with an attractive head and expression, moderate front angulation, super width to the rear quarters, a little flat on the top line when standing, just out moved 2.
2. EL BAZ TAJ TAIF IBN YAMADAN. A taller feathered gold, curvy outline, pleasing moderate angulation to front and rear, deep chest and strong top line, super coat and muscle condition, moved well.
3. FARASHAH STARRY NIGHT

Moves precisely coming and going, and has a lovely light side gait.
2. TAMARISK DIWAN TAKALLUF OF SKYE. Black and fawn litter sister to 1st, completely different type and not as developed. Ideal size with a curvaceous outline, lovely head with kind expression, balanced front and rear angulation and when she settled moved lightly and soundly from all directions
3. CHAYA’S ZSARA
Puppy Bitches 9-12 months
1. GEMINI KOKO. A delightful quality cream feathered, still only puppy, however she is very mature and well developed for her age, hope she doesn’t get any heavier. Pleasing head with dark eye and pigment, long neck into excellent shoulder placement, good return of upper arm, correct depth and length of rib cage, strong hind quarters which she really used on the move. For one so young her movement is sound both fore and aft, controlled and effortless. One I am sure will make up to a Champion very soon. Winners Bitch and Best Puppy

Sweepstakes
Judge: Mr. Peter Ortiz (Algazara)
Judging the 2017 National Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes was an honor and utmost pleasure. I thank the SCOA membership for my nomination and selection, and the Saluki community as a whole for supporting Sweeps with their entries. Assessing the large entry was challenging but extremely satisfying. Overall quality was exceptional, making the task of selecting placements much more difficult, particularly in the most competitive classes, where the number of worthy contenders was high. My judging directive: assess distinct breed type and overall quality of the specimen in multiple aspects: temperament, conformation, balance, moderation, conditioning, and traditional Saluki movement. I don’t penalize lack of show ring experience; quality should always come before showmanship, though training eases assessment.
My ideal Saluki is distinct from a great distance with that undeniable silhouette. Topline uninterrupted, a curving line from head to tail (set low with good length). Neck enters the body imperceptibly, with shoulders well-laid back; front moderately placed under the body, with moderate chest fill, never overdone. Underline smooth and clean, with deep brisket rising to the abdomen, creating a small “waist”; hind structure also not overdone, with low-set hocks. Head moderately long, with slight stop creating parallel planes; ears with good leather and sitting high, eyes oval and deeply set. Movement should be fluid and effortless. Temperament: gentle/noble. Pigment should be either black or liver depending on color. This is what I sought in the following placements.
