2016 national conformation critique
Regular Classes-Dogs
Judge: Ms. Dagmar Hintinberg-Freisleben
I would like to thank the Saluki Club of America for the invitation to judge the 2016 National Specialty. I am humbled as your organization is highly respected.
I would like to mention particular individuals for their attention during the four days: Show Chair, Monica Stoner: thank you for your concern to make my assignment
extraordinary; SCOA President, Gary Roush, thank you for allowing me to shop at the vendors’ booths and attend the Wine and Cheese gathering; Karen Frost and Jennifer Fox for hosting the time outside of judging.
Most of all, thank you to all the exhibitors who presented their Salukis to me. Since it was an unexpected year for me to judge as I am sadden by the tragic loss of Diana Allan, but the exhibitors were able to make this assignment memorable by presenting their Salukis to me. I am honored to have judged your breedings.
Since 1987, I have attended seven specialties in Lexington, Kentucky. Weather could be hot and humid with heavy thunderstorms. Having the specialty at Purina Farms in
air-conditioned, anti-skid flooring, open-air exercise areas and lawns in perfect condition with sufficient parking for cars and motorhomes is the perfect location for the yearly multi-day Saluki event. It was the perfect event organized by the committees.
May I please add a footnote. This year’s logo on the T-shirts, coffee mugs and pins was an outline of an upright beautiful and felicitous Saluki. This contour corresponds to my Facebook photo of Ch Dakira Sawahin, who was the
German respresentative and winner of the extraordinary title at the 2008 Eukanuba World Challenge. I would have been happy had the artist have asked for my permission to use this outline; as copyright is valid in all media.
On to points of my selections. As there is no comments about proportions in the AKC standard, my opinion is a Saluki should not be short in body. Angulations front and rear, would be too straight and not moderate in a short body. The whole impression of the dog would change by the altered outline. The silhouette is a very important feature of each breed to recognize the breed at a glance. A few Salukis were a bit too short in body and too straight in rear angulation.
On the other hand, there were only a few with an exaggerated rear angulation. However there were many Salukis with straight front assembly: shoulder, upper arm
and pasterns. Unfortunately this is a feature that affects the breed worldwide. In addition, I saw unstable front actions caused by weak carpal joint and elbows.
In most Salukis, movement showed neither an exaggerated reach nor an exaggerated drive; but an effortless movement with grace. How nice to see that!!! Particularly
my top five (BOB, BW, BOS, SD, SB) and my AOMs stand out in strong movement. What an impressive view watching them moving in the large ring handled perfectly!!
I liked the heads and expression a lot. Heads were typical for the breed, but I would prefer stronger underjaw on some.
It was really a touching and humbling moment for me to be in the ring with almost 80 Salukis in the Best of Breed Competition class. I would have liked to have given more AOMs as more Salukis deserved it. Congratulations to the breeders, owners and handlers for such wonderful Salukis.
During the next weeks I’ll look in my little black pocketbook now and then and remember a wonderful event and the many Salukis I judged and made notes on. I would have taken a few home with me.

6-9 Month Dog (3)
1. Desperado PB Live at the Troubador. Grizzle,
excellent type, nice size, a pleasant head and expression,
strong underjaw, long strong neck, high earset, classic
proportions, excellent topline, nicely-curved underline
ending up in an excellent tuck-up, moderate angulation in
the rear, would prefer a little more front angulation, moves
well in all directions, very promising boy.
2. Desperado PB Live at Red Rocks. Red, but a bit shorter
in body, topline and underline a bit less harmonious
compared to first place, tends to cross his front feet when
moving.
3. Albion’s Jazz ‘Round About Midnight. Black & silver, tall
young male, long head and expression, high earset with
lots of feathering, would prefer a smoother topline, very
narrow front, straight in front and too much angulation
in the rear, weak pastern and toes out, unstable front
movement.
9-12 Month Dog (7, 1 abs)
1. Owl Ridge Sundance Kid. Red, black-fringed, nice type
and size with correct classic proportions, very balanced,
nice head, good topline and nice curved underline, would

prefer the head less heavy, impressive black pigment,
excellent topline and underline, would prefer more
shoulder layback.
3. Zyan into the Windstorm. Grizzle, young male of the
lighter type, typical head and expression, a bit short in
body, narrow in front; straight in shoulder, upperarm and
pastern, unstable front movement; excellent underline,
would prefer less happy tail carriage.

proportions and black pigment, not often to be seen in a
crème, best mover of the three, but he is a bit unstable in

2. Yamadan Tariq Arabesque. He is more reserved. A
bit short in body, toeing out a bit and with unstable
movement of the front, more than the class winner
3. Yamadan Karabah Samir. Square proportions, hard
muscle tone, would prefer a less high tail carriage.

impressive male with lots of substance, beautiful head

himself in the ring. Would prefer a little bit more tuck-up,
nice feathering, in great condition.

Smooth, 9 years old, excellent type and good size, very
elegant boy representing a lighter type of a Saluki, nice
head with great pigment, correct ear set and carriage of

therefore it was not easy to decide.
